Did you know that Kennington has had a succession of commemorative tree plantings? They were planted on the Recreation Ground in Ulley Road and include an oak marking Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee, the "Billington Oak" for the Coronation of George V, two oaks for King George V’s Silver Jubilee, and the Festival of Britain oak. Residents planted an oak tree for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and this is thriving. Next year, the 70th year of Her Majesty’s reign, will see a unique, UK-wide tree planting initiative - The Queen’s Green Canopy (QGC). The Council has decided to join this initiative by planting its own tree. Details of where, when and what type of tree will be released in the autumn.
