Kicking up a stink

Community Councillors are taking up the charge to deliver results and improvements to the odour issues that large areas of Kennington have suffered for years from the Water Treatment Works.

A Task Group, including residents directly affected by the odour, has been established to deliver clear solutions to the problem, engaging with the Borough
Council, Southern Water and other agencies.

The plant which imports waste from other areas, as well as processing Ashford waste, will have an increased load from the approved 750 homes soon to be built in Conningbrook Park.

The Group will focus on the degree to which the odours constitute a “severe odour annoyance”, which is a major concern of the World Health Organisation. It
will engage with key stake-holders to reduce odours that affect quality of life, children playing outside and the necessity of leaving doors and windows
constantly closed.

It will report back regularly to the full Council but is aimed at getting real improvements for those who live in Kennington.
