The Council has appointed a firm of architects to produce a design for the proposed community facility on Bockhanger Square. This will involve a public consultation before the design is finalised and submitted for planning permission.
Residents have previously rejected the offer by Ashford Borough Council to provide a facility as part of a housing development, opting for preserving green space around a stand-alone building. Negotiations will then begin with ABC or its successor on the terms for making the land available. We shall also seek grant and other funding sources.
Larissa Johnston Architects supplied the successful bid. The firm’s principal partner was the lead architect in the Hackney Marshes Centre, among other projects.
In a parallel decision, in February Council agreed to open a call for proposals for a Community Mobiliser. This person or team will contribute to the enhanced welfare, improved health, reduced isolation and greater community spirit among residents in Kennington. This is to be achieved through the identification of gaps in the supply of clubs and groups. The initial focus will be on an area approximately half a mile in radius from Bockhanger Square. If the work is extended for the second six month period, the main focus of new work will be on an area around The Julie Rose Stadium.
